Size | H 65cm x L 170cm (+10cm tassels) Material Wool Blend Stamp History From 1941 to 1945, Hong Kong experienced her darkest 3 years and 8 months that saw civilians tortured and executed, family wealth confiscated and refugees from China repatriated. The end of Occupation, concurrently the return of the British colonial government, brought about an occasion for celebration. It was against the backdrop of Hong Kong liberation that this commemorative stamp was issued. The vertical slogan on the right said “The phoenix revived and rejuvenated” while the left “China and Britain in peace”. The incorporation of animals demonstrated the presence and influence of both Western and Chinese culture in Hong Kong. On the immediate sides of the portrait of King George VI are two bats, homophonous to the word “prosperity” or “luck” in the Chinese language. On the further ends are the lions of England holding the shields of the Chinese characters of Hong Kong, signifying the return of the British guardianship. As the phoenix emerged from the flaming ribbon that contained “1941” and “1945”, as well as the latin word “resurgo” that translates to “arise”, the stamp conveyed an inspiring message that Hong Kong had bounced back from years of wartime demonstration.
